July 29th, 2013 was a Friday. I woke up to a world where container technology had just hit a critical mass. Docker, the company that had been quietly working on this game-changing tool, released their first version on March 14, 2013. The term “microservices” was still something you heard more in tech podcasts than in your daily standups.

I remember when we started talking about containers at work. It seemed like magic—these lightweight virtual machines that could run anywhere and be spun up or down as needed. But like most new technologies, it wasn’t just a matter of “it works,” but rather “how do I make it work for us?”

We were using Vagrant and VMs for our development environments at the time, which meant we had to deal with slow provisioning times, inconsistent setups, and the general headache that comes with managing virtual machines. Docker promised to change all that.

The first thing I did was set up a local container on my machine. It worked flawlessly. My heart skipped a beat as I realized how easy it would be for us to standardize our development environments. No more “works on my machine” arguments. Everything could be contained, versioned, and shared with just a few commands.

But then came the hard part: convincing the team to embrace this new technology. We had legacy applications that were tightly coupled with our servers. The idea of wrapping each component in a container seemed too good to be true, especially when we didn’t have a clear understanding of how it would all fit together.

I spent hours debugging issues, trying to figure out why a particular application wouldn’t run in a container. There was something about containers that made everything feel fragile. Maybe I just had too many years of experience with more robust virtual machines. It wasn’t until we started using Docker Compose to manage our services that things began to fall into place.

We also ran into some interesting security issues. Containers, while lightweight and portable, still shared the same host kernel. This meant that if something went wrong in one container, it could potentially affect others. We had to be very careful about how we isolated processes and what permissions they had.

Another challenge was integrating Docker with our existing CI/CD pipeline. Jenkins didn’t have great support for Docker back then, so we had to rely on some custom scripts and plugins. It wasn’t perfect, but it worked—just barely. The promise of continuous deployment became a bit more realistic, albeit still fraught with complexity.

As the month went on, I couldn’t help but feel both excited and wary about where this was all going. Docker’s release felt like a turning point in DevOps, but implementing it in practice required navigating a minefield of technical challenges and team resistance.

Looking back, I realize that even though the tools have improved drastically since then, the core problems we faced remain relevant today—how to standardize environments, manage dependencies, and ensure security. Docker was just one piece of the puzzle, and for us, it took time to figure out how best to use it in our organization.

But on this day, I can say that the journey had only just begun. We were about to embark on a new era of application development, and the road ahead would be full of both triumphs and setbacks. Docker was here, and whether we liked it or not, containers were coming for us—like it or not.
