Kubernetes on a Budget: Fighting with the Helm
September 25, 2017. This day felt like a mix of excitement and frustration as I sat down to write this blog post.
Just a few months ago, Docker had dominated the conversation in tech circles. The container wars seemed over; everyone was jumping on Kubernetes. But as I dove into the ecosystem, it became clear that there were still a lot of challenges to overcome. One of those challenges? Helm, the package manager for Kubernetes. I was working with some small teams who wanted to get started with containers and microservices but didn’t have the budget for all the bells and whistles.
Helm was supposed to make Kubernetes more accessible by providing a way to manage complex configurations through templating and dependency management. But setting it up wasn’t as straightforward as we hoped. We spent hours wrestling with the documentation, trying different plugins, and debugging our way through errors that seemed to pop out of nowhere. The Helm community was growing fast, but so were its bugs.
I remember the first time I tried to use helm install. It felt like hitting a wall. “What’s this? A file named Chart.yaml? Isn’t that… like, a chart in Excel?” I asked myself as I navigated through yet another layer of complexity. But as frustrating as it was, we had to find a way to make it work.
We decided to use Helm with a limited set of features—just enough to get our microservices up and running without breaking the bank. We used basic templates for now, focusing on simplicity over flexibility. It wasn’t pretty, but it got us going.
Then came the real challenge: monitoring. With Kubernetes clusters, we needed visibility into what was happening inside these containers. We wanted to be able to see if a service went down, or if traffic was flowing as expected. Prometheus and Grafana were becoming the go-to tools for this, but they required significant setup time and resources—something we didn’t have in abundance.
We opted for a simpler solution: logging and basic health checks. While not as comprehensive as what Prometheus could provide, it allowed us to keep an eye on our services without investing too much upfront. We set up kubectl commands to tail logs and check the status of pods regularly. It was far from ideal, but it worked for now.
As I reflect on this time, it’s clear that the journey with Kubernetes wasn’t just about technology; it was also about learning how to adapt in a rapidly changing environment. We didn’t have all the resources or time we needed, so we had to find ways to work within our constraints. It was a tough but necessary lesson.
Today, looking back, I see how far we’ve come. Kubernetes and its ecosystem have matured significantly since then. Helm has improved, and tools like helm.sh make it easier to manage your applications. But the experience taught me valuable lessons about resilience, resource management, and the importance of finding pragmatic solutions even when faced with limitations.
