September 23, 2013 - Dockerizing the World One Container at a Time


Today is September 23, 2013. I remember it vividly because that’s when I started diving headfirst into Docker. Back then, we were just starting to scratch the surface of containerization as a mainstream concept. I was working on a platform that was still mostly virtual machines (VMs), and the thought of using containers seemed like an ambitious gamble.

The Setup

At the time, our architecture was largely monolithic, with VMs sprawled across different servers for each service. We were looking to streamline operations and make things more agile. Docker promised a way out of the VM jail and into a world where software could be packaged and deployed more easily. But as with most new technologies, there were challenges.

The Experiment

The first thing I did was set up a simple Docker container for our web application. It worked! This wasn’t just some toy project; we actually had a real service running inside a Docker container. It felt like a revelation. However, the road from there to production was paved with obstacles.

One of the biggest issues we faced was dependency management. Our app relied on several libraries and tools that weren’t easily portable across different environments. We spent hours pinning down versions, and even then, subtle version mismatches could cause headaches. Managing these dependencies in a Docker container was tricky, but it pushed us to write more robust deployment scripts.

The Arguments

There were also heated debates within the team about when to use containers versus VMs. Some argued that VMs provided better isolation for sensitive data and applications. Others felt that with proper configuration, Docker could offer similar levels of security while being much lighter on resources. These arguments often spiraled into discussions about whether we should even be pursuing a container strategy at all.

The Debugging

Debugging was another issue. When something went wrong inside the container, it could be incredibly difficult to reproduce and diagnose compared to a full VM environment. I remember spending countless hours trying to get a stack trace from a misbehaving service only to find out that it was an environment variable issue or something equally simple but non-obvious in a Docker context.

The Progress

Despite the challenges, we made steady progress. We began containerizing smaller services first and then worked our way up to larger components of our architecture. Each success built momentum. By December 2013, we had several microservices running inside containers on a few servers, and it was starting to feel like a viable alternative.

The Future

Looking back, that period felt like the dawn of containerization. It wasn’t just about Docker; it was about rethinking how we deploy and scale applications. But there were so many unknowns and rough edges. We were navigating uncharted territory, and sometimes that meant falling flat on our faces.

Today, containers are standard practice in most development workflows. Back then, it felt like a long journey with uncertain outcomes. But the lessons learned from those early experiments laid the foundation for what containerization would become. And isn’t that how it goes with technology? We stumble into new ideas, face challenges, and eventually, they shape the future.
