Notes from a Mid-November Day in 2010


November 22, 2010, was a typical Friday for me. I was wrapping up the week with a few late nights and early mornings as part of a small team managing some internal applications at my company. We were still riding high from the chaos we managed to inflict on our systems during our last “chaos day,” but this week was all about getting back to business.

The term “DevOps” was starting to gain traction in tech circles, and I found myself thinking more and more about how to bridge the gap between operations and development. We were still using a mix of Puppet and Chef for configuration management, and there was an ongoing debate on which one we should stick with. I found myself digging through old logs, trying to piece together what happened before the alert came through. It was frustrating, especially when we didn’t have clear documentation of our configuration files.

That led me to think about how much effort went into writing reliable tests for our applications. We had a few basic integration tests in place, but they were far from comprehensive. The idea that continuous delivery and deployment could make our lives easier seemed almost utopian at the time. But with tools like Heroku selling out to Salesforce and AWS continuing to evolve with events like re:Invent just around the corner, it was clear that we couldn’t afford to stay in place.

I spent a few hours over the weekend going through our existing deployment processes. We still relied heavily on manual deployments via SSH scripts, which often resulted in mistakes or downtime. The promise of Chef and Puppet seemed like a step towards reducing those risks. I started drafting up a plan for integrating some of these tools more fully into our development workflow.

On another front, NoSQL databases were all the rage, and we were looking at whether they could replace some of our traditional relational database usage. We had just started evaluating Cassandra as an alternative to our existing MySQL setup in a few critical services. The learning curve was steep, but I found myself excited about the potential benefits of distributed storage and handling large datasets.

As I wrapped up for the day, I found myself reflecting on how much the tech world was changing. The launch of OpenStack earlier that month had brought more focus on cloud computing, and it felt like a new chapter in our industry was unfolding right before my eyes. But the real work—writing code, setting up systems, debugging failures—was still very much the same.

The Hacker News stories from this week painted a picture of a tech world that was always moving but often seemed disjointed. From Google’s Beatbox to airport security debates, it felt like there were so many interesting things going on, yet I couldn’t help feeling like our team was lagging behind in some areas. But then again, the journey is what matters more than the destination.

As I closed my laptop and prepared for a much-needed weekend, I knew that next week would bring its own set of challenges and opportunities. The world of tech kept moving, but so did we. We just needed to keep adapting and pushing forward.
