July 2010 was a month that felt like the epicenter of tech industry chaos. I remember it vividly as the summer heat kicked into high gear and along with it came a whirlwind of DevOps practices, NoSQL databases, and cloud services.

Config Management Wars

I was in the thick of the config management wars at the time. Puppet and Chef were duking it out, each trying to claim supremacy over the other. At my company, we had invested heavily in Puppet for our infrastructure as code needs, but I couldn’t help feeling a bit of FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) as folks touted Chef’s flexibility. One day, I found myself arguing with a colleague about whether Puppet was better or if we should switch to Chef just because it seemed cooler. We didn’t make any changes in the end, and looking back, that argument felt like a waste of time. The tools were both powerful, but choosing one over the other was more about personal preference than anything else.

Netflix Chaos Engineering

Netflix’s chaos engineering practices also started making waves during this period. I had heard all about it from some friends who worked at Netflix and marveled at their approach to testing system resiliency by intentionally breaking things. At my company, we were still in the early stages of implementing any kind of load testing or disaster recovery drills. The launch of OpenStack also felt like an exciting development.
