Kubernetes Hell & the Joy of Helm
I remember the day vividly. It was April 17, 2017, and we were in the thick of Kubernetes mania. Our team had just started our migration from a monolithic architecture to microservices with Kubernetes, and it felt like we were sailing into uncharted waters.
The Setup
We began by setting up a simple Kubernetes cluster on AWS using Kops (Kubernetes Operations). It was smooth sailing at first—deploying services, rolling updates, and monitoring everything through the Kubernetes dashboard. We were excited about the future of our infrastructure, convinced that we had found the holy grail of container orchestration.
The Unforeseen Storm
But good things don’t last forever. As more services joined the cluster, we started running into issues. Our deployments became inconsistent; some pods would get stuck in a “CrashLoopBackOff” state, and manual intervention was required to recover them. Monitoring everything from the Kubernetes dashboard had become a daunting task with dozens of services.
Then came the infamous kubectl command-line utility. It worked great for simple tasks but fell short when dealing with complex configurations or multiple namespaces. We found ourselves frequently resorting to shell scripts just to manage our deployments, which wasn’t ideal in a CI/CD pipeline.
The Search for Salvation
That’s when we heard about Helm. Initially, it was just another project to evaluate, but as soon as we started using it, the difference was palpable. With Helm, deploying and updating services became much more predictable and repeatable. We could version our deployments and track changes easily. It felt like finding a life raft in the middle of a storm.
The Helm Experience
We began by creating simple Helm charts for each of our microservices. At first, it was slow—we had to manually create templates, define values, and package everything up. But as we got more familiar with it, things started falling into place. We even went so far as to create a few custom resources to extend the capabilities of Helm.
One specific moment stands out. We were in the middle of deploying a major service update when one of our pods failed unexpectedly. With kubectl, we would have had to dig through logs and try to figure out what happened. But with Helm, we could roll back to the previous version with just a few commands. It was like having a time machine right there.
The Battle for Standardization
Of course, not everyone on the team was as convinced about Helm’s value. Some argued that Kubernetes itself should handle all these deployment complexities. Others thought that rolling our own solution might be better in the long run. These debates were tough; we had to balance the benefits of a standardized tool against the potential downsides.
In the end, we decided to stick with Helm. It wasn’t perfect, but it provided enough value that it outweighed the arguments against it. We even contributed back some code improvements and templates for others in our organization to use.
The Aftermath
Looking back, that migration was a significant turning point for us. Kubernetes opened up a world of possibilities, but Helm helped us navigate through the complexities. Today, we have a more stable and predictable deployment process, and it all started with a few lines of YAML and a bit of patience.
Kubernetes may have been our “holy grail,” but without tools like Helm, the journey would have been much rougher. And that’s something to remember as we continue to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of cloud-native technologies.
