Wrestling with WebAssembly: A Year Later


Today marks a year since the webassembly explosion began in earnest. I still remember the excitement and skepticism swirling around as we started to integrate WASM into our platform engineering stack. Back then, it seemed like every other conversation revolved around how to optimize performance or wrangle Rust code into something useful for server-side logic.

The Initial Hype

The early days were a rollercoaster of excitement. With projects like Moon and Ghostty capturing the attention of millions, everyone was clamoring to see what WebAssembly could do. At first glance, it seemed like the perfect solution for edge computing—fast, secure, and portable. But as with any shiny new tech, we quickly found ourselves wrestling with real-world challenges.

Debugging the Rust

One particularly gnarly issue cropped up when we tried to use WASM on our high-traffic service. We had a nice little Rust module that did some number crunching for us, but integrating it into our Node.js backend was proving more complicated than expected. The errors were cryptic and hard to debug—something about V8’s internal structures not aligning with what our WASM code expected.

The first few days were spent pouring over disassembly and trying to figure out where the mismatch was occurring. It wasn’t until I pulled a nighter and decided to step through the Rust code that it finally clicked. There was an alignment issue in the way we were passing data between the JS world and our WASM module. A simple align directive in the Cargo.toml fixed everything, but boy, what a headache.

Platform Engineering and Developer Experience

Platform engineering has truly become mainstream, with everyone clamoring for more DX (Developer Experience) tools. In our team, we’ve been pushing hard to integrate CI/CD pipelines that are both efficient and developer-friendly. But as the number of services grows, so does the complexity. We’re constantly arguing about where to draw the line between ease-of-use and maintainability.

One of my biggest takeaways is how much time developers spend waiting for deployments or debugging issues. It’s not just about making tools faster; it’s about reducing cognitive load. Tools like doppl, a modern CI/CD tool we’ve been using, have made our life easier by streamlining the process and providing clear, actionable feedback.

FinOps and Cloud Costs

Speaking of complexity, FinOps has become an increasingly critical part of platform engineering. With cloud costs skyrocketing, we’ve had to get more granular about how we manage resources. DORA metrics are everywhere now—deploy frequency, lead time for changes, change failure rate—and they’re helping us make data-driven decisions on where to focus our efforts.

A recent incident with Apple Photos phones home on iOS 18 and macOS 15 made me realize just how critical this is. Our team was dealing with a sudden spike in costs due to some edge cases that weren’t caught in our monitoring. It highlighted the importance of not just optimizing for performance but also for cost efficiency.

Looking Back

As we reflect on the past year, it’s clear that WebAssembly has been more than just hype. It’s become an essential part of our stack, providing a bridge between the client and server that was previously unattainable. But with every new tool comes its own set of challenges—performance optimization, debugging, CI/CD integration.

For me, 2024 is about navigating these complexities while continuing to push for better developer experience and cost management. We’ve come a long way since those early days of excitement and confusion, but the journey isn’t over yet.
