Around 10 AM, I received a notification on Slack that one of our services had started failing in production. Upon investigation, it turned out to be a misconfigured database connection string that somehow sneaked through the code review process. We quickly rolled back the changes and fixed the issue, but not before causing some downtime. The team was upset about the rollback, but we knew better than to blame anyone. After all, it’s just another day in DevOps.

As the day went on, I spent a significant amount of time discussing the chaos engineering practices we were implementing with my team. Netflix had started the trend and we wanted to follow suit by introducing randomized failures into our system. The idea was simple: if you can’t break your app, it’s not ready for production. It’s like a fire drill; you hope you never have to use it, but when you do, it could save lives.

The team wasn’t entirely on board with the concept, citing concerns about customer satisfaction and potential data loss. I understand their worries, but I argued that we needed to prepare our system for the unexpected, even if it meant causing some temporary disruptions during testing. In the end, we agreed to start small, rolling out the first set of chaos tests over the weekend.

In between debugging sessions, I spent some time reading about NoSQL databases and their advantages over traditional SQL databases. The NoSQL hype was in full swing, with new frameworks like Meteor and Light Table catching everyone’s attention. While these tools were interesting, they didn’t immediately apply to our project. Still, it was a good reminder of how fast the tech landscape can change.

Later that evening, I attended a webinar about continuous delivery practices being promoted by companies like Etsy and ThoughtWorks. The concept resonated with me; we needed better processes for managing deployments and ensuring that changes could be rolled out smoothly without causing downtime or data loss. It was an eye-opener to see how far some teams had gone in automating their deployment pipelines.

As I reflected on the day, I realized that DevOps wasn’t just about tools and technologies—it was also about culture and mindset. We needed to embrace a more collaborative approach to development and operations, where everyone was responsible for ensuring high availability and reliability of our services. It’s easy to get caught up in the latest trends, but sometimes it pays off to take a step back and focus on the fundamentals.

That night, as I lay down to sleep, I couldn’t help but think about how much had changed since 2012. The tools and technologies have evolved significantly, but the challenges remain the same: delivering quality software efficiently while maintaining high availability and minimizing downtime. As a DevOps engineer, it’s both an exciting and daunting task, and one that requires constant learning and adaptation.
