Containers Gone Wild: A Docker Diatribe
December 15, 2014. I remember the day like it was yesterday. It’s funny how technology moves in strange ways; one year ago, containers were a gleam in the eye of many startups and enthusiasts, but now they’re practically everywhere. Docker, that little-known open-source project with the cute logo and simple slogan “Change the way you ship software,” has taken the tech world by storm.
I’ve spent most of my career dealing with VMs—hospitable virtualization for applications to live in. But lately, I’ve been wrestling with containers, trying to figure out where they fit into our ever-evolving infrastructure landscape. It’s like stepping back and forth between two worlds: the world of full-blown VMs with all their overhead, and now this new realm of lightweight, containerized environments.
Last week, we had a minor crisis in ops. A developer, who I’ll call Alex (because his name is too long), pushed a container to our staging environment without properly testing it. The result was an application that went down in a blaze of glory, taking part of the network with it. We spent hours trying to figure out what went wrong, and eventually tracked the issue back to some misconfigured networking settings within Docker.
Docker’s promise is that containers should be portable; you build them once, run them anywhere. But our experience showed me that in practice, they can introduce more complexity than they solve. The docker run command, while simple on the surface, has a bewildering array of options and flags, making it hard to get things right without diving deep into its documentation.
I remember when Docker first came out. The community was small but passionate, filled with developers who were excited about the possibilities. But now, every other meeting seems to revolve around some aspect of Docker: how to manage it, how to secure it, and how to integrate it with our existing infrastructure. CoreOS’s Rocket has been making waves too, promising to shake things up, but so far, it feels like Docker is just hanging on.
I’ve been arguing internally about the value of containers. Some in ops want to embrace them fully, seeing them as a way to simplify and standardize deployment. Others are wary, pointing out the potential for security risks and operational overhead. Our team is split, with some pushing for more adoption and others advocating for sticking with what we know works—VMs.
One of the most frustrating parts of working with Docker has been dealing with its inconsistent behavior. One day it works flawlessly; the next, a minor change in the environment or dependencies can cause everything to fall apart. I recall a particularly vexing issue where a container was running perfectly on my machine but failed miserably on our staging server due to some obscure setting difference.
But despite all the pain, there’s something about containers that keeps me intrigued. The idea of being able to run an application in a lightweight environment, isolated from other processes, is powerful. Maybe it’s just because I’m a programmer at heart and love solving problems. Who knows? Maybe one day Docker will truly live up to its promise.
For now, though, I’m still wrestling with the beast. Containers may have gone mainstream, but they’re far from perfect. As 2014 draws to a close, I find myself looking forward to seeing how this landscape evolves in the coming year. Will Kubernetes or Mesos/Marathon provide more robust solutions? Or will Docker continue its rapid evolution and mature into something truly remarkable?
Only time will tell. But for now, I’ll keep fighting the good fight—figuring out how to make containers work for us while also acknowledging their current shortcomings.
