Y2K's Ghost and the Apache Conundrum


April 15, 2002. It’s been almost a year since the world had its collective breath held for the Y2K bug, and yet it still looms over every aspect of our work. I remember those late nights, the stress, the long drives home filled with more than just my thoughts but also the sounds of the radio playing softly in the car. The fear that somewhere, something would break, that the world might come to a grinding halt.

Today, though, we’re back to business as usual. Or so it seems. I find myself staring at a server log from one of our mission-critical applications running on Apache. This is nothing new, but today, my mind drifts to those dark days of December 31, 2000.

The Apache web server has always been a rock in the stormy seas of tech; it’s aged well and remains a reliable stalwart for many. But as I delve into this log, I’m reminded of the debates we had about migrating from our aging Netscape servers to Apache years ago. We were still on the fence, weighing the benefits against the potential risks.

One day last week, a colleague stumbled upon an interesting issue. Our application was occasionally throwing 500 Internal Server Errors. After some digging, I found that it seemed to be happening every few hours around 3 AM. Not exactly a pattern that leapt out at me, but something niggled in the back of my mind.

I fired up top and noticed that Apache’s child processes were starting to hit their memory limits around the same time. Memory pressure was causing some requests to fail, leading to those 500 errors. It’s a classic case where Apache is under-resourced, but how did we get here?

The server had been running on its default settings since its deployment in 2001, and no one really thought about it until now. This was an important lesson: always keep your configurations updated.

I opened up the httpd.conf file to start tweaking some settings. The first thing I did was increase the memory limit for each child process (MaxRequestWorkers). Then, I decided to take a look at the logs again to see if there were any patterns that might help explain why this was happening so regularly.

As I scrolled through the logs, I noticed something peculiar: the requests causing issues seemed to be coming from one of our internal tools that we use for monitoring and management. The tool had been running without changes since 2000, but as applications grew more complex and data volumes increased, this simple script was starting to show its age.

It dawned on me that we needed a change in how we managed these types of requests. Instead of relying on the same old script, I proposed rewriting it using Python or Perl—something that could handle more complex logic without breaking down under pressure.

Rewriting scripts is never fun, but sometimes necessary. The code was simple enough to maintain, and with some basic checks, it could now gracefully handle spikes in traffic while still providing useful metrics.

After making these changes, I went back to the Apache logs. The 500 errors had stopped appearing around 3 AM, and our internal monitoring tool was running much more smoothly. It wasn’t a glamorous fix, but sometimes the simplest solutions are the best ones.

Looking at this problem now, I can’t help but feel nostalgic for those Y2K days. While we were worried about the world ending, it turns out that day-to-day issues like these are just as important. They remind us to keep our systems healthy and to always be prepared for the unexpected.

As April 15th comes and goes, I find myself reflecting on how much has changed since then—Apache is still here, but so have new technologies and challenges. The world may move on, but some things, like server configurations and keeping a watchful eye, never truly go away.
