July 14, 2014: Container Party's First Party


It’s been a while since I last wrote in my blog. A lot has happened over the past months, and it feels like I’ve just landed on an alien planet where everyone is talking about Docker, microservices, and Kubernetes. Today marks another milestone for me as we launch a new product that’s heavily dependent on containers and orchestration.

The Early Days of Containers

I started my journey with Docker back in 2013 when it was still considered a bit of a curiosity. At the time, I was working on a project where we needed to spin up multiple instances quickly and efficiently. Docker promised that with its lightweight nature, we could containerize our applications without having to deal with the usual VM overhead.

We began small, using Docker for local development environments. It worked like magic – no more setup issues or compatibility problems between developers’ machines. We could just use docker-compose and everything was up and running in a few minutes. However, as we scaled out our services into production, we started to face some real challenges.

The Scaling Dilemma

As the number of containerized services grew, managing them became cumbersome. We had over 50 services running across multiple servers, and each one required its own set of configuration files and environment variables. It was a mess, and it was only going to get worse as we added more microservices.

Enter Kubernetes (K8s). The first time I heard about K8s, I thought it sounded too good to be true – orchestration for containers with all the features we needed: auto-scaling, rolling updates, and self-healing. We were skeptical but intrigued. The thought of being able to manage 50 services with a single command was enticing.

The Initial Setup

Setting up Kubernetes wasn’t easy. Back in July 2014, it was still very much in beta and the documentation was scattered. We had to piece together various tutorials and examples from GitHub repositories just to get our cluster running. Our first attempt at deploying K8s on CoreOS was a disaster. A simple fleetctl command resulted in a cluster that was barely usable.

We spent countless nights debugging, trying to understand why nodes were failing or why services weren’t coming up properly. It wasn’t until we finally got a stable setup that we felt somewhat relieved. But the excitement didn’t last long as we started encountering more issues with resource management and service discovery.

The Realization

One day, while troubleshooting an outage in one of our microservices, I realized how much work was still ahead of us. We were relying on kubectl commands to manage deployments and updates, which was error-prone and slow compared to what we needed for a production environment. We quickly understood that Kubernetes had its own learning curve and wasn’t the silver bullet it seemed.

Despite the challenges, I knew we couldn’t go back. Containers and orchestration were becoming the new norm, and if we wanted to stay competitive, we had to embrace them fully. We began refactoring our processes to integrate K8s more seamlessly into our workflow.

Looking Back

Looking back at this time, it’s clear that while Kubernetes has evolved significantly since then, the basics remain true: containers and orchestration are here to stay. The journey wasn’t easy, but it taught us valuable lessons about resilience, automation, and the importance of a well-thought-out architecture.

Today, as we continue to scale our services and push the boundaries of what’s possible with Docker and Kubernetes, I’m reminded that every tech trend comes with its own set of challenges. The key is to stay adaptable and continuously learn from each iteration.
