Docker had just released its first public version on March 19, 2013, but I didn’t dive into containers until later that year. As someone who has been working with infrastructure and deployment strategies since the early days of cloud services, this moment felt like a turning point.
I was managing a small team responsible for the reliability and performance of our applications at a startup. Our stack was a mix of traditional VMs running on AWS, but we were starting to explore other options. Docker seemed promising because it promised portability, speed, and simplicity—three things that every engineer dreams about when dealing with complex infrastructure.
The first thing I did was set up a local Docker environment. The setup process wasn’t as straightforward as I hoped. Docker’s documentation back then was more sparse than today, so I spent quite a bit of time figuring out the basics. I remember spending hours trying to get my containerized application to run without running into errors related to network configurations and environment variables.
Once I had a basic container up and running, I started experimenting with our existing applications. We were running several microservices across multiple VMs, and the thought of replacing those with Docker containers was both exciting and daunting. The excitement came from the promise of reduced overhead and faster deployment cycles; the fear was rooted in the unknown—would we run into unforeseen issues once we scaled up?
The first real challenge came when I tried to manage dependencies within our containers. We had a mix of languages and frameworks, each with its own set of libraries and runtime environments. Ensuring that all these pieces fit together seamlessly inside a container was no small feat. It required careful planning and configuration.
As I delved deeper into Docker’s ecosystem, I discovered etcd and CoreOS. These tools started to shape the way we thought about deploying applications at scale. We began toying with the idea of using CoreOS as our base image, leveraging fleet for orchestration. The concept of Kubernetes was still in its early stages, but the buzz around it made us curious.
One particularly frustrating day, I spent hours trying to debug a networking issue between containers. Docker’s network overlay feature was still experimental and not without its quirks. It was a reminder that while new technologies come with exciting possibilities, they also bring their own set of challenges.
That evening, as I sat in our office, surrounded by the faint hum of servers and the glow of monitors, I realized how far we had come from traditional VM-based deployments. The journey to containerization was just beginning, but it promised a future where applications could be built once, run anywhere.
As the clock struck midnight, I decided that tomorrow would bring another day full of challenges and opportunities. We were on the cusp of something big—something that could change how we build and deploy software.
Looking back, January 13th, 2014, might not be a date anyone remembers, but it marks my entry into the world of containers. It was the day I started to rethink everything I knew about deploying applications, and it set the stage for the years to come.
