August 12, 2013 - Dockerizing Legacy Apps
August is a month of long, lazy afternoons and the start of summer vacations. For many developers, it’s about taking some time off to clear their heads from the relentless grind. But for me, it was just another day in ops land.
The Morning Grind: A Tale of Two Worlds
I started the morning with a cup of coffee (weak but comforting), and as I settled into my chair, I began to browse Hacker News. It was fascinating to see what was making waves that month—Hyperloop, Lavabit shutting down, Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer stepping down… it all felt like a distant echo compared to the mundanity of our day-to-day.
We were knee-deep in containerization efforts at work, and Docker had just started to gain some traction. Our team was tasked with moving our monolithic applications into something more modular. It wasn’t pretty; we had a legacy app that spanned multiple servers and services, but it worked (mostly). The idea of splitting it up into containers seemed daunting, almost like disassembling an old car to put the pieces back together in a better way.
The Problem: Legacy App on a Budget
Our legacy application was written in C++ with a touch of Perl, running on top of a custom-built web server. It handled requests for our product catalog and user management. It was monolithic, fragile, and had a few dependencies that made it hard to replicate in a new environment.
We needed a containerization strategy, but the cost of setting up a Docker infrastructure wasn’t trivial. We were working with limited resources, so every decision needed to be carefully considered. We decided to start small—convert our simplest service first, which was a user management API written in Perl.
The First Steps: Building and Testing
The first step was to build the container image for our user service. I spent hours writing Dockerfiles, tweaking environment variables, and ensuring that every dependency was correctly installed. It wasn’t easy; some of the older libraries were not compatible with modern Linux versions, but we managed to get it working.
Next came testing. We had a CI/CD pipeline in place, so running tests against the new container image was straightforward. However, real-world scenarios are never as simple as test cases. I spent a few nights debugging issues where environment variables weren’t being set correctly or where certain libraries were causing conflicts with others.
The Debugging Jamboree
One particular issue stood out. Our application used a custom logging library that didn’t play nicely with Docker’s stdout and stderr redirections. Every log entry was being duplicated, leading to massive log files. It took me hours to track down the problem—a simple configuration change in the Dockerfile that needed a restart of our container.
Another challenge was setting up the service to communicate properly with other services within the network. We had to tweak DNS settings and ensure that all services were accessible via proper names. This was particularly tricky because some of our legacy services didn’t use standard naming conventions, so we had to create custom scripts to map them out.
The Afternoon’s Victory
By the end of the day, I had a working Docker container for the user service. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a step in the right direction. We ran some load tests and everything seemed to work as expected. There was a sense of accomplishment, knowing that we were making progress towards our goal.
Looking Forward
As August drew to a close, I sat back and reflected on what we had achieved so far. Dockerizing legacy applications is not just about technology; it’s about understanding the architecture, dependencies, and the entire ecosystem in which these systems operate. It’s a labor of love that requires patience and persistence.
Docker was still young then, but its potential to transform how we build and deploy software was clear. We were at the beginning of something big—a shift towards more modular, scalable, and maintainable architectures. Who knew where it would lead us?
