Title: When Docker Was Just Another Option on the Shelf
February 11, 2013. A chilly Friday in San Francisco. The air was thick with the scent of new tech and endless possibilities, but I couldn’t help but feel like we were still just exploring the shelves.
Back then, we had just started toying around with Docker. It felt like another container option on the crowded shelf of virtualization and cloud technologies. But something about it felt different. It was simple. Almost too simple.
I remember the first time I played with Docker. I spun up a few containers using docker run and docker exec. It was elegant, almost magical how you could just type out commands to get up-and-running with an application stack. But under the hood, it felt like magic. There were no clear answers on how Docker managed to be so lightweight while providing isolation—no, I mean, where exactly was that isolation coming from? I poked and prodded, but couldn’t find any deep magic.
The real world brought its own set of challenges. Our team was working on a new project—a complex application with multiple services, and we were struggling to manage dependencies and configuration across environments. We tried Docker, and it worked, kind of. But there wasn’t a clear path for deployment yet—how do you take a containerized app from your local dev environment all the way to production?
Meanwhile, Heroku’s Ugly Secret was making waves. It got us thinking about what we were building on top of and how much control we had over our infrastructure. I remember feeling a bit uncomfortable knowing that a lot of the magic we relied on might not be as simple or controllable as it seemed.
The microservices term was still relatively new, but the idea was gaining traction. We started toying with the concept—breaking down monolithic applications into smaller services—but there were no clear answers on how to orchestrate them all. I remember arguing with my team about whether we should go full microservices or stick with our existing monolith. The debate went back and forth, but nobody had a definitive answer.
In between all of this, we were trying to figure out how to ship code more efficiently. The 12-factor app was still fresh in everyone’s minds, but it felt like we were just scratching the surface. We tried various CI/CD setups with Jenkins and other tools, but they often fell short when dealing with complex configurations and dependencies.
One day, while debugging a particularly stubborn issue, I found myself staring at a line of code that seemed too simple to be true. It was one of those moments where you feel like you’re missing something obvious, and it’s driving you crazy. I ended up spending hours tracing the behavior through our application stack, trying to figure out why we were seeing this strange issue.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I found the culprit: a configuration file that was being overwritten by another service during deployment. It was a classic case of “it works on my machine,” and it served as a reminder that no matter how many times you think you’ve tested something, there will always be edge cases that slip through.
As February 11th came to a close, I found myself reflecting on all the challenges and questions we had. Docker seemed like such an elegant solution, but it was clear that there were still a lot of unknowns around how to use it effectively in production. The microservices buzz felt exciting, but the complexity of orchestrating multiple services was daunting.
Looking back, 2013 wasn’t just about Docker or microservices—it was a time when we were trying to figure out what tools and practices would best serve us as we built more complex applications. It’s funny how much things have changed in just a few short years, but at the same time, it feels like some of those core challenges are still with us.
