October 7, 2013 was a day that felt like the beginning of something big in tech. I remember it well because it marked the first time I delved into the newly released Docker container technology, and by extension, the microservices architecture. Little did we know back then how this would transform our operations landscape.


The morning started with a typical Monday: meetings, code reviews, and the occasional coffee run. But something was stirring in the air. Our DevOps team had been talking about Docker for a while now, but today felt different. We were going to deploy it on one of our staging environments to test its waters.


I spent the morning setting up my machine with the latest Docker version. It was exhilarating—new toys always spark enthusiasm! I followed the setup guide and fired off some simple containers using docker run. The simplicity was mesmerizing: create a container, configure it, start it up. But as I began to think about integrating this into our existing infrastructure, reality set in.


Our staging environment was a mix of traditional VMs and a few containers running on an open-source platform. Moving from one system to another seemed like a daunting task. Would we need to change all our deployment scripts? How would the network configuration handle it? There were no easy answers yet.


After setting up Docker, I started building some basic services using the 12-factor app methodology. It was refreshing to see how straightforward deploying applications could be. But when I tried to scale one of these services, things got complicated fast. Kubernetes was announced just a few months ago by Google, and it looked promising for managing containerized applications at scale.


By lunchtime, we were trying out the Kubernetes API with our services. We set up a couple of nodes in our staging environment and deployed some simple pods. Everything seemed to work perfectly until we hit the first bug: networking issues between the containers on different nodes. It turned out that Kubernetes wasn’t quite ready for prime time yet; some features were still experimental, and there were known bugs.


I spent most of the afternoon debugging these network issues. After hours of tracing logs and trying different configurations, I finally managed to get a working setup. But it was frustrating—this level of complexity shouldn’t be necessary just to run a simple web service! We needed a more streamlined approach.


As the day wore on, my frustration grew. I started wondering about the future of container orchestration. Was Kubernetes going to become the standard? Or would something else emerge? The tech landscape was shifting rapidly, and it felt like we were navigating uncharted waters.


By the time I got home that evening, I had a rough understanding of how Docker and Kubernetes worked together. It wasn’t perfect by any means, but it was progress. The experience taught me a lot about containerization and orchestration, and it solidified my belief in the power of microservices architecture.


Looking back, those early days with Docker were exciting yet challenging. We were on the cusp of something big, and we were all eager to see where it would take us. If only I could have foreseen just how far this journey would go over the next few years—containerization, orchestration, SRE practices, and beyond.


That day marked the beginning of a new chapter in my career, one filled with endless challenges but also immense opportunities. And as we say goodbye to 2013, I’m excited to see where this tech journey takes us next.
