It’s funny how time can warp and bend, making you wonder where exactly the last decade went. On a day like today in 2011, I was knee-deep in the chaos of trying to keep our little startup’s infrastructure from completely falling apart—yes, it was that kind of day.

We were using Puppet for configuration management, which was all the rage at the time. The thought of using Chef was floating around, but we were committed to Puppet and were navigating its quirks with a mix of frustration and determination. That morning, I found myself wrestling with a particularly nasty node that just wouldn’t follow the manifest properly.

I remember staring at the logs for what felt like an hour, trying to figure out why this node was misbehaving. It had to be something simple, right? Maybe some outdated package or a rogue environment variable… but no luck. I even went as far as rolling back our last Puppet run just in case it was a recent change that bit us. No dice.

Reading through those comments, I couldn’t help but think about how close we had come to similar issues ourselves.

GitHub for Mac was another big announcement that day. We were still using the browser-based version of GitHub, so the new Mac app seemed like an exciting upgrade. But as always, with any major software change, there were bound to be teething problems. That evening, I spent a good portion of my time debugging our internal build process after a new GitHub for Mac update caused our CI pipeline to go haywire.

The NoSQL hype was in full swing too, and we had been debating whether to switch from our existing relational database to something more flexible. The idea of using MongoDB or Cassandra sounded appealing, but the learning curve was steep, and there were always security concerns lurking in the background.

And then there was Heroku selling to Salesforce. It was a strange move, considering how quickly Heroku had risen in popularity. Was this the start of another consolidation wave in cloud services? Or would it be the catalyst for something new?

As I wrapped up my day, reflecting on all these changes and challenges, one thing became clear: DevOps wasn’t just about tools; it was about embracing a culture of change and continuous improvement. We needed to keep learning, experimenting, and iterating if we wanted to stay ahead.

June 6, 2011, felt like the perfect storm of technical challenges mixed with exciting new opportunities. And as always, I found myself right in the middle of it all—fighting fires, trying new tools, and hoping that tomorrow wouldn’t be any more chaotic than today.
