Title: November 5, 2012 - A Day in the Life of a DevOps Engineer
November 5, 2012. The air is crisp as I pull into the office parking lot. Today’s going to be another busy day, and it starts early with a 9 am meeting about our company’s new Chef cookbook for infrastructure.
Chef, Puppet, SaltStack—these tools are all vying for my attention these days. Each one seems to have its own merits and drawbacks, but I know we need to standardize on something. The team is divided: some swear by Puppet, while others are loyal to Chef. There’s a healthy debate going on about which tool can best handle our growing infrastructure.
As the meeting progresses, I try not to get too worked up over which one we should choose. I’ve been using Puppet for years now, and it’s got its quirks. But Chef is gaining traction in the community, and it seems like a lot of people are switching to it. It’s not just me wrestling with these tools; my peers are too.
In the afternoon, I head over to the Ops team’s war room. The chaos engineering efforts from Netflix have inspired our own small-scale experiments. We’re trying to simulate failures in our services to see how robust they are. Today, we’ve decided to do a simple load test—knock out one of the database instances and see what happens.
I fire up my terminal and start running the tests. The first few minutes go smoothly, but then I hit an unexpected issue: one of our application servers starts throwing errors. After digging through the logs, I realize it’s due to a configuration problem that we hadn’t anticipated. It takes some back-and-forth with the developer who owns that part of the codebase before we figure out what needs to be fixed.
At 3 pm, I get a call from our support team. They’ve been getting a lot of calls about slow performance on one of our key services. It turns out there’s a bottleneck in our database queries that we hadn’t noticed during development. We had to quickly scale up the RDS instance and tweak some query parameters to keep things running smoothly.
Later, I spend some time with the DevOps lead discussing how we can better integrate these kinds of optimizations into our continuous delivery pipeline. We’re still using Jenkins for builds and deployments, but it’s showing its age. We might need to look at something more modern like GitLab CI or CircleCI.
As the day draws to a close, I realize that today was just another typical day in DevOps land. It’s all about balance—finding the right tools, dealing with outages, and trying to keep our infrastructure as stable and reliable as possible. The industry is changing so fast; it’s hard to keep up sometimes.
But then again, isn’t that part of the fun? The constant challenge of staying ahead of the curve, learning new technologies, and pushing ourselves to do better every day.
That’s how I was spending my days back in 2012. A lot has changed since then, but some things remain the same—like the never-ending quest for better infrastructure and the ever-present challenges we face as DevOps engineers.
