December 5, 2016 - When Kubernetes Was Just a Thing
Today marks the fifth of December in 2016. It’s just another workday for me as an engineer and platform manager. I’m sitting here with my morning coffee, typing away at some bug report when something catches my eye – a notification about a “Political Detox Week” on Hacker News. It’s funny how sometimes these things just slip by in the rush of daily tech news.
Back then, Kubernetes was still new, and everyone was buzzing about it. We were just starting to integrate it into our platform at work. I remember the first time we tried it out – oh man, there were so many kubectl errors and pod restarts. The excitement and chaos of a new technology are hard to beat.
We also had Helm popping up on our radar. It felt like an attempt to tame Kubernetes by providing a better way to manage configuration files for our deployments. I remember the discussions we had about whether to stick with plain YAML or give Helm a shot. There was this fear that we would end up with a layer of complexity, but as time went on, it started to make sense.
Ishio and Envoy were also making waves in the industry. We briefly considered them for some network-level load balancing before deciding that our current setup was good enough for now. But I kept an eye on their progress because you never know when they might come in handy.
Speaking of networking, I spent a fair amount of time with Prometheus and Grafana replacing Nagios as our monitoring solution. The transition wasn’t always smooth – we had some issues with metrics collection and visualization that took us several weeks to iron out. But eventually, the benefits became clear: real-time dashboards, better alerting rules, and a more robust system overall.
GitOps was still in its infancy back then, but it was starting to gain traction as a way to manage infrastructure code. I found myself arguing with team members who were resistant to writing Terraform configurations for our infrastructure. “We’ve always done it this way,” they would say, “why change now?” It was a classic case of resistance to new technology, and we ended up finding common ground by emphasizing the benefits: consistency, reproducibility, and easier collaboration.
On this day in 2016, I’m still working through one particularly stubborn bug. We had a service that kept randomly crashing at night, and no matter how many logs or metrics I looked at, it felt like we were missing something obvious. Eventually, it turned out to be an obscure edge case with the way Kubernetes handled node taints. Once I figured that out, everything started working smoothly again.
As I write this, I can’t help but think about all the changes and challenges that have come since then. The serverless hype was just starting to take off, and now it feels like every other day there’s a new service or framework promising to revolutionize how we build applications. But at the end of the day, the basics remain: reliable infrastructure, good monitoring, and robust code.
Looking back, I’m grateful for these early days of Kubernetes and all the learning that came with them. Even though some of those challenges feel quaint now, they were real problems to solve then. And that’s what keeps it interesting – always something new on the horizon.
