June 4, 2012: Chaos Reigns (or at Least, It Did)
Today marks a year since I joined my current company. Back then, we were still navigating the choppy waters of infrastructure and ops, with DevOps just emerging from the shadows as a concept. The tools we used, like Puppet and Chef, were still in beta for some, and the term “NoSQL” was often bandied about without much understanding.
I remember sitting at my desk late one night, trying to figure out why our application servers kept crashing under load. It was a Friday evening, and as usual, everyone else had left by now. The only company I could hear was from an old episode of Star Trek playing on the headphones my wife sent me. Yes, she sent me Star Trek.
After a few hours of digging through logs and trying to replicate the issues in our staging environment, I realized it wasn’t just about the usual suspects like memory leaks or misconfigured services. It turned out we were hitting some limits with our load balancer. The sudden spike in traffic from an unannounced promotion had pushed us over a threshold that caused the servers to timeout and restart.
The next day, I raised a ticket to increase the timeout settings and added some buffer to handle spikes better. But it got me thinking about how we could be more proactive with monitoring and automation. We were using Nagios for basic alerts, but it wasn’t giving us enough visibility into what was happening behind the scenes.
That night, after another frustrating day of code reviews and meetings, I decided to dive into some Chef scripts. I wanted to automate our setup process so that any new server could be provisioned with a click. It felt like we were at the cusp of something big—like the early days of open-source software, when everyone was trying to make their own mark.
But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. The puppet vs. chef debate was still raging on in the DevOps community. I found myself arguing the merits of each tool with my colleagues, sometimes late into the night. Chef’s declarative syntax seemed cleaner, but Puppet’s Ruby-like DSL offered more flexibility for complex tasks. Ultimately, we decided to stick with a combination, but it meant our ops team had to be well-versed in both.
Meanwhile, I was keeping an eye on the tech news around me. The launch of OpenStack caught my attention; it seemed like a promising direction for cloud infrastructure. But Heroku’s sale to Salesforce didn’t sit right with me—why would someone who built a platform for developers want to sell it to a giant corp? It just felt wrong.
And then there was the continuous delivery book that started making waves. I remember thinking, “We can do this.” The idea of pushing code changes into production automatically seemed both exciting and terrifying. How did we get from manual deployments with rollback plans to something that could happen in minutes?
Fast forward a few months, and I found myself writing more and more about these challenges on my blog. It was as if I had joined a community of misfits trying to make sense of the chaos around us. But amidst all the noise—NoSQL hype, Stuxnet, and the rise of cloud computing—I felt like we were making progress.
So here’s to June 4, 2012: a day when the future seemed both promising and terrifying. We were navigating uncharted waters in tech, but together, we were learning how to steer our ship through the storm.
