Kubernetes Complexity Fatigue: A Personal Reflection


December 2, 2019. The air feels a bit colder this morning as I step out of my usual bustling office into the brisk December chill. The tech world is buzzing with whispers of SREs and platform engineering, but today, it’s personal.

I’ve been dealing with Kubernetes complexity fatigue lately. It started innocently enough—just another day of tuning configurations to get our microservices running smoothly. But as I sat in front of my terminal, typing out YAML files, I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of frustration. The more we scale and evolve, the more complex it becomes. And let me tell you, managing stateful sets, storage classes, and network policies can turn into an endless game of whack-a-mole.

Last week, I found myself wrestling with ArgoCD, trying to sync our application configurations across multiple clusters. The idea is great—automate the chaos—but setting it up felt like throwing a boulder down a mountain; it takes a lot of energy and sometimes you don’t see the full effect until much later. The GitOps approach is promising, but we’re still feeling out the kinks.

On another front, eBPF has been gaining traction in our operations team. I’ve spent some evenings reading up on it—this new tool that promises to give us more control over the kernel without needing root access. It’s fascinating and somewhat terrifying. The potential for performance optimizations is there, but so are the pitfalls of misusing it.

Speaking of pitfalls, our internal developer portal (Backstage) has been a mixed bag. We wanted something easy to set up and use, but we’ve run into all sorts of issues with dependencies and compatibility. At one point, I found myself arguing over whether we should go for a monolithic solution or break things down into smaller, more manageable pieces. The answer is always “it depends,” which isn’t very helpful when you’re trying to make decisions.

Today, as I sat in the quiet of my home office, staring at yet another Kubernetes dashboard, I realized something. It’s not just about the technology anymore; it’s about managing the complexity it brings. We’re building a platform that needs to support both new and legacy services, all while maintaining reliability and performance. The more tools we bring into the mix—the more layers we add—the harder it is to keep everything in sync.

But amidst the frustration, there’s also a sense of determination. We’re not going back; this is where our future lies. So, I’m going to take a deep breath, start reading up on the latest Kubernetes best practices, and maybe even pick up eBPF again with fresh eyes. Because while the path ahead may be long and winding, it’s also full of possibilities.

And who knows? Maybe by the time 2020 rolls around, I’ll have figured out a way to make Kubernetes complexity a little less… complex.
