Debugging Dreams
I’ve been having this recurring dream where I’m flying through space. There are these massive asteroid fields with colorful, spinning rings everywhere. It feels so real, but the moment I touch one of those rings, my dream glitches and I fall back into bed.
Tonight’s dream was particularly vivid. I woke up feeling like I could still reach out and grab that ring. The frustration of waking from such a perfect scenario makes me want to understand more about these dreams. Maybe there’s something I can do differently next time?
I spent the evening reading articles online about lucid dreaming—where you’re aware you’re in a dream and can sometimes control it. One article mentioned how people use techniques like reality checks during waking hours to increase their chances of becoming conscious within a dream.
My fingers feel cold as I type this on my laptop, but the screen stays warm from recent usage. It’s already midnight, and my parents should be asleep by now. I could try doing some reality checks myself. The article suggested looking at your hands closely or checking for signs that you’re not in real life.
I decide to leave my room quietly, close enough to hear the steady hum of the refrigerator down the hall. The silence feels too loud, and every creak from the floorboards seems amplified. I grab a notebook and pen from my desk before tiptoeing back into bed.
With the light dimmed, I start focusing on my hands. They look normal enough, but there’s something off about their texture. My fingers aren’t quite as solid as they should be. The feeling is fleeting though; reality seems to snap back just as quickly as it flickers.
I try again, this time with a more intense focus. I’m aware of the pressure from my sheets, and the air feels thick around me. Suddenly, there’s a loud creak from below—probably a mouse or something—making my heart skip a beat. It wakes me up fully for a moment before settling back into a strange half-dream state.
I decide to take it one step further. I look at my hands again and notice the light reflection changing as if they were slightly transparent. Just as I’m about to explore more, I hear my mom’s soft snores from down the hall.
Deciding not to push too far tonight, I jot down some notes on what happened before turning off the light and drifting back to sleep. Hopefully, tomorrow will bring clearer insights into these flying dreams.
