The Forgotten Battery

I sit on the cold floor, legs stretched out. A toy car lies beside me. Its engine hums softly, but no sound comes out when I press its button. I wiggle it back and forth, hoping to find where the sound stopped. My fingers trace the tiny holes on top; they look like little mouths waiting for food. I reach into my pocket and pull out a small, rectangular shape—my extra batteries. One by one, I try them in the car’s battery compartment. The hum grows louder until finally, it roars to life. I press harder on its button, watching as the red light blinks and the car races across the room. It stops at the toy box where a tiny train waits for me to play with both together.
