The screen of the Game Boy flickers weakly before going dark. A red light blinks slowly on the side. The buttons are silent now, no more beeps or dings. The Mario sprite stands still in the level, never to move again. The cartridge slides out, and I press it back in, hoping it will work. Nothing changes. The battery is drained, and there’s nothing left to do but put the Game Boy away for now.
