A Dog's Eye View of the World

The world is a busy place today. Cars whiz by, their engines humming as they speed along the road. People scurry past me on their smartphones, oblivious to the small dog like me who sees it all from this perfect vantage point. I’m sitting in the shade of my favorite tree, catching flies that buzz around with alarming speed.

It’s a clear, crisp day late in October—autumn has fully taken hold. The leaves are changing colors and drifting gently down, painting the ground with hues of orange, red, and gold. I’m not really interested in their pretty display; I’m more focused on the fact that they create a perfect game of fetch.

A man walks by, his wife following closely behind him, both engrossed in their phones. I can’t help but wonder how they can enjoy such small screens when there’s so much else going on around them. I watch as a squirrel runs up a nearby tree, cheeks bulging with nuts. The squirrel pauses to glance at me, probably wondering what kind of distraction this little dog is.

A boy and his sister stroll by, both carrying their backpacks. They’re oblivious to the world beyond their own concerns until they spot me. The girl giggles, pointing enthusiastically as she yells for her brother to look. He laughs and starts walking in my direction, the boy’s sneakers clomping on the pavement.

I watch him approach with a mix of amusement and irritation. It’s not that I mind when people notice me; sometimes it’s fun to be the center of attention. But today, they’re going to have to put their phones away for a moment to chase after a ball. The boy tosses it into my direction, and I catch it mid-air with a playful bark.

The game is on, and I’m fully engaged now, running between them as we play. There’s something about the simplicity of these moments that feels so rare in this fast-paced world—moments where life isn’t just about work or screens but about connection and joy. As the sun begins to dip lower in the sky, casting a golden light on everything, I realize how much I’ve been missing by sitting still.

When they finally call it quits for the day, they gather their things and head off, leaving me alone again under my tree. But that’s okay because tomorrow is another day, full of new adventures and unexpected turns. For now, I’m content to bask in this moment, basking in the crisp air and the changing world around me.
