The red light on the game box turns green. A loud beep sounds as the controller is plugged in. A colorful screen lights up with a jumping character. Small hands press buttons, making the character move right and left. The sound of beeps and boops fills the room. Sometimes it goes bing-bong, which makes me giggle. But mostly it’s the beeping that stays. When I push the button, there’s no pop like with my toy cars. Instead, it just beeps. I keep trying different buttons, hoping for a car to come out or maybe even better—dinosaurs! The screen shows many characters now, but none are dinosaurs. A beep and a jump happen together, making me laugh each time.
