The First Day of Fall Leaves
The sky is a deep shade of blue today, but the air has that crispness that hints at autumn. I’ve been looking forward to this for weeks—those first few leaves turning from green to yellow and orange, fluttering down like confetti. Today marks their official debut.
I’ve spent some time in the park near my house, hoping to catch a glimpse of them before they become too abundant. The path is still mostly covered in summer’s lush green, but there are small patches where leaves have already changed colors. I stop by a particularly vibrant one and pluck it from the ground. It feels cool between my fingers, delicate yet sturdy.
The leaves are still plentiful on the trees, hanging onto their branches as if they’re having an argument about when to finally let go. I’m starting to get curious—what’s taking them so long? Is there something wrong with these trees that they haven’t changed color yet?
I decide to pick a few more leaves and stuff them into my pockets. They’ll make for good bookmarks later, or perhaps a small collage to hang on the wall at home. The park is quiet now, almost empty except for me and the occasional bird flying overhead.
As I’m admiring one of the trees, a gust of wind blows through, rustling the leaves and sending some swirling in circles. They look like they’re dancing, or perhaps just trying to decide where to land next. It’s both frustrating and beautiful—these leaves are so close but not ready yet.
I think about how much I used to hate autumn when I was younger. Now, it’s my favorite season. Maybe it’s the way everything seems more vivid and alive during these transitions. The colors, the textures, the newness of it all—it feels like a fresh start, even if the leaves are taking their time.
I decide to make the most of the day by walking home, kicking up some fallen leaves here and there. They make soft sounds underfoot, crinkling with each step. It’s become my little ritual now—feeling the crispness in the air, hearing the crunching sounds, and watching those leaves dance around me.
By the time I get to my front door, I’m holding a small pile of leaves. I can’t wait to see what the rest of autumn will bring, but for now, this first day is perfect.
