Afternoon Rain

The world outside is cloaked in a soft gray, with rain pattering softly against the glass. The sky holds a distant blue, a rare break from the gray that seems to have settled over everything. My hands trace the lines of code, each character seeming more deliberate and precise than usual. I am working on a small project—a map generator for an RPG game. The challenge is in making the maps feel organic, with forests and rivers forming in natural patterns.

The window draws my attention now and then, as if the rain might be drawing me out. But it’s a pleasant distraction, a quiet break from typing. I lean back slightly, letting the cool air nudge against my face. Outside, people hurry by, their umbrellas creating small islands of dry in a sea of wet.

I start adding another layer to the map generation algorithm—a method that calculates river flows based on elevation and terrain type. It’s slow work, but rewarding when it finally starts to produce something resembling natural landscapes. The game will be set in a dense forest, and I want every tree, every creek, to feel like part of a living world.

In the corner, my phone chirps with a notification about climate change initiatives. A quick glance shows a series of articles on how small changes can have big impacts. It’s easy to get lost in numbers and statistics, but seeing those examples here, among the green code that represents forests and rivers, makes it feel more tangible.

A soft knock at the door startles me momentarily. I look up, expecting someone to be there. The door opens just a crack, allowing a gust of cool air and a stray raindrop inside. A letter blows through, caught by the draft, and lands on my desk. It’s a notification for an upcoming local coding meet-up about environmental tech.

The idea of gathering with others who share this passion intrigues me. Maybe it’s time to step out from behind my screen and join some of these discussions in person. There’s something powerful about collective effort, especially when it comes to tackling the challenges that face our planet.

I pick up the letter, a faint smile on my lips as I return to typing. The rain continues its gentle melody, a reminder both of nature’s beauty and the importance of nurturing it.
