New Year's Day Coding
The screen flickers under the warm glow of my desk lamp. I’ve spent the past few hours tweaking the code that drives the weather simulation in the new game. The clouds should move more naturally, and the raindrops need to be less predictable. Each line is a puzzle piece, fitting together with just the right amount of friction.
The calendar on the wall says today is January 1st, but the game engine doesn’t recognize dates yet. I’ve been working on this feature all week, trying to make the world feel alive and dynamic. The snowflakes should swirl around the trees like they’re dancing, and the lightning strikes should come without warning.
I run through a few test cases, ensuring everything works as intended. The raindrops land in random spots, creating puddles that grow and shrink over time. I watch as one particularly heavy drop lands softly on the ground, sending a ripple through the water like someone gently flicking it from their finger.
The code is almost perfect. There’s just one more thing I need to fix—the way the fog behaves around the mountains. It should rise and fall, thickening in certain areas but thinning out as the sun casts its light over the landscape. This will make the player feel like they’re truly exploring a world that changes with time.
I take a break from typing to stretch my fingers and neck. The last few days have been intense, pushing through late nights to get everything just right. My eyes catch on an old postcard from Iceland, tucked away in one of the drawers. It reminds me why I got into this—because creating something that feels so alive is rewarding.
I set a new goal for today: perfecting the fog algorithm. Then maybe I’ll take a walk outside to see if the real world looks any different after all my coding. The fresh air could help clear my head and perhaps inspire some new ideas.
As I go back to typing, the keyboard feels cool under my fingers, like it’s part of me now. Each keystroke is deliberate, adding another layer to this digital world that will soon be seen by millions.
