The game controller buzzes in my hand. I press the big red button; nothing happens. I try again, harder this time—still no go. The screen stays blank, just a blue background with white letters saying “loading.” I wiggle the controller back and forth, hoping it will work. A small light flickers at the corner of the screen but doesn’t turn on any games. Maybe if I change the batteries? I push them out carefully, then pop in new ones from my toy box. The controller hums softly as I put them in, but still no game starts. I tap the start button again and again, watching as the letters just sit there, not moving. Finally, I shake the controller, making it buzz loudly before giving up and setting it down.
