My finger presses the controls furiously—left, right, fire—but the ship just hovers there, not moving at all. The stars are supposed to zoom by like a wild ride, but they stay still, like they’re locked in place. I tilt my head, trying different buttons, hoping something will snap into place. The screen changes colors—blue, green, and white—all mixed together in a messy dance that confuses the eye. I hear my own breath, quick and shallow, as I stare at the frozen space scene. Finally, with a sharp click, the game locks up completely, freezing on a starfield that seems to pulse and throb like it’s alive.
