A Day of Pixelated Adventures
Today’s been full of surprises in the realm of coding. Started with a tutorial on how to animate a character moving across the screen using JavaScript. The character jumps and walks smoothly now—just like in those games I’ve always loved.
Around lunchtime, got stuck on a tricky part where the character’s jump was too high and inconsistent. Decided to take a break and stretch my legs. Noticed a few leaves still clinging to some trees despite it being early November. The sky had this perfect mix of blue and grey, making me think about how seasons can be represented in code.
Got back to coding, and the character’s movements were smooth again! Feeling pretty good about that. Then stumbled upon a new library for graphics rendering. It’s got this neat feature where you can create parallax effects. Tried it out and was amazed by how easy it is to make things move at different speeds in the background while the main action happens on top.
Spent some time experimenting with different settings until I found one that felt just right. Made a little demo where a character runs across a landscape that slowly scrolls, giving the illusion of depth and motion. It’s simple but effective—felt quite proud about it.
Got a notification for an update from the latest game development newsletter. Noticed they’ve got some new tutorials on creating interactive environments in virtual reality. Might have to save up for a VR headset eventually, but for now, I’ll stick to my 2D pixelated adventures.
Evening roll around with nothing else to do, so I revisited an old project I started a while back—a platformer where the player has to collect coins and avoid obstacles. Added some sound effects today—bouncy coin sounds that sync up perfectly with the collection animation. The little details like these make all the difference.
Decided to push the boundaries of what’s possible in this space, even if it’s just for personal satisfaction. After tonight, I’m feeling a bit more confident about tackling complex projects and making them look polished. Who knows where coding will take me?
