A Day in the Woods
The trees surround me with their thick, sturdy trunks and whispering leaves. Each step on the forest floor crinkles underfoot—dry brown leaves and occasional soft moss. The air is crisp and carries a faint scent of pine needles. Birds sing from high up, their melodies blending into an ambient symphony.
I’ve been here for hours, exploring the trails I know so well but never tire of. Today’s focus was on a particularly interesting tree near the edge of the clearing. Its bark is rough and deeply ridged, with a few smaller trees growing around its base. I sit down to examine it more closely, my fingers tracing the texture.
A soft breeze rustles through, carrying with it the distant sound of running water. It’s the creek, not far from here. The stream shimmers in the sunlight that filters through the canopy above, casting dappled patterns on the ground. I imagine myself as a child again, following its banks, splashing my feet into the cool water.
As I sit, the sky changes subtly—lightening shades of blue give way to pinks and purples. The sun is beginning its descent, painting the edges of the trees in warm hues. Shadows grow longer, lengthening along the forest floor. It’s time to head back, but not before noting a few more details for my sketchbook.
The journey back feels slower than the one here, perhaps because I’m aware of the fading light. The path seems clearer under the moonlight, the stars beginning to appear in the sky above. Each step brings me closer to home, and soon enough, I find myself at the trailhead, the familiar entrance leading back into the real world.
The woods are a sanctuary, an escape from the noise of daily life. This day was about slowing down, observing, and finding peace amidst the natural beauty around me.
