Stranded Code

The screen is filled with lines of code that just won’t cooperate. I’ve been staring at this for hours, trying to figure out where the bug lies. It’s supposed to be simple—a function to sort an array alphabetically. But somehow, it keeps crashing on a single line.

I’ve tried everything: adding comments, removing whitespace, even changing variable names. But nothing works. The error message is cryptic, telling me there’s something wrong with my loop structure, but I can’t spot it. Frustration builds in my chest, making it hard to breathe.

The room around me feels small and constricting. Sunlight streams through the window, casting a warm glow on the keyboard, but everything else is shrouded in shadows. Outside, leaves are starting to turn—maybe it’s early October already. The change of seasons seems like a good distraction from this stuck code.

I try to step away for a moment, walk over to the window, and look outside. A few trees have already shed their green for golden hues. Their branches reach out almost invitingly, as if they’re trying to break through the glass. But inside, I’m trapped by my own stubbornness and this relentless loop of failure.

Maybe it’s time to take a break. I can’t keep staring at this screen; my eyes feel like they might burst. I head back to the window, grab a notepad from the desk, and jot down some random thoughts. The lines of code fade away, replaced by sketches of trees and leaves, scribbled notes about which parts of the function are working and which aren’t.

After a while, I return to my chair, feeling a bit more clear-headed. Maybe switching perspective helped. I decide to walk around the room and get some fresh air—no need to be stuck here forever. As I pace, I hum softly, trying to keep the tension at bay.

Back at the desk, I take a deep breath and start from scratch. This time, I focus on the process rather than rushing towards the solution. Slowly, methodically, I rewrite the function, paying close attention to each line. And then, after what feels like an eternity, it works. The console prints out the sorted array neatly.

A sense of relief washes over me as I look at the now-functional code. It’s small victory, but one that feels incredibly satisfying. Maybe today wasn’t so bad after all.
