The Screen's Cold Glow at Night

The screen lights up in the dark room. It’s bright and white, like the sun in the sky but without warmth. I can see my fingers clearly now—they look pale against the glowing backdrop. A game loads slowly, making a funny noise as it draws images on the screen. The characters appear, moving around in strange ways that seem to twist and turn. Sometimes the game stops for a moment, the screen goes black, then pops back to life showing what happened before the pause. I tap the buttons carefully, trying different ones to see if any change how the characters move or what they do. Some make funny sounds, others nothing happens at all. The glow from the screen is like a little moon in my room now, casting shadows on everything it touches.
