Afternoon Coding Binge
It’s been a hot summer afternoon, the kind where everyone seems to have gone home for the day. The computer screen glows against the dimming light outside, casting flickers of blue and green onto my desk. I’ve been working on that coding project all by myself since lunchtime. My fingers dance over the keyboard as I try to perfect a tricky function. It’s one of those moments when you just have to push through, because giving up feels like admitting defeat.
I’ve got this new function where you can input coordinates and it’ll calculate whether a point is inside or outside a polygon. It’s a bit complex, but that’s what makes it fun. I’ve spent the last hour trying different algorithms and tweaking variables. There are times when the code just works, and those moments feel like magic—like suddenly unlocking a puzzle after all these hours.
But there’s also this part where my mind starts to wander. It’s easy for thoughts about music videos and that new movie coming out next month to intrude. The movie is about space travel, which makes it perfect timing since I’m working on something vaguely space-themed right now. There are scenes of ships floating in vast emptiness, and the sound of engines rumbling softly in the background.
I pause my coding for a moment, just to watch some trailers online. The visuals are stunning—stars swirling around, planets spinning like colorful baubles. It’s not hard to imagine myself on one of those spacecraft, zipping through space with nothing but the vastness and the beauty outside. I close the tab when it starts getting too distracting, reminding myself that there’s still plenty of coding to do.
Back at my desk, I continue typing away, trying different approaches until something clicks. The function works! There’s an instant surge of satisfaction as the green checkmark appears next to my code. It’s a small victory, but it feels like progress. I save everything and take a quick break to stretch my arms and legs.
It’s these moments that remind me why I love coding so much—those times when you can lose yourself in something completely and watch the results of your work come together beautifully. After today, there’s still more to do, but for now, it’s okay to feel a little proud.
