October's First Day of Coding Club

The room is dimly lit as I sit at the desk in our cozy corner. Today marks my first time attending coding club—my mom convinced me to join after a few weeks of hesitation. The air smells like recycled paper and the faint hum of computers adds a steady background noise.

I’m trying to create a simple animation, one that makes a circle grow and shrink on the screen. It’s been easier said than done. I type out the code carefully, making sure each semicolon is placed precisely where it belongs. The monitor shows a blank white screen at first, but as I run the program, a small circle appears, pulsing in and out.

A quick glance around shows other kids engrossed in their projects too. Some are debugging, others just staring at their screens in thought. A table next to me holds a stack of colorful posters about programming languages; Python, JavaScript, and Ruby catch my eye. Each one seems to whisper its secrets as I reach for the poster on Python.

The screen flickers again, this time showing two circles instead of one. Frustration builds inside but I push through it, determined not to give up. Perhaps I can create a sequence where both circles grow and shrink in alternating patterns. The idea excites me enough to make the next few lines of code flow more smoothly.

As we near the end of club time, everyone’s projects start coming together—some with bouncing balls, others drawing shapes. Mine still isn’t perfect, but seeing all these creations gives me a sense of accomplishment. Maybe coding isn’t as hard as I thought.

With my project saved to a USB drive, I plug it into my laptop to take home and continue working on it. The club ends with high fives and goodbyes, leaving the room quiet once more. Outside the window, fall leaves swirl in the breeze, their colors vivid against the gray sky. It’s a reminder of change—of starting something new, even if it means facing challenges along the way.

The journey to mastering coding feels like navigating through these vibrant, ever-changing autumn leaves. Each step forward, whether smooth or bumpy, brings me closer to understanding this world of logic and creativity.
