The Buzzing Controller
The controller hums softly in my tiny hands. Its buttons are smooth, almost slippery with the static from my socks. I press the start button—nothing happens. Try again, press harder—still nothing. Anger bubbles up but I push it down. Maybe a quick zap of the power button will work magic. The buzzing stops and starts again. I’m about to give up when suddenly the screen lights up with a small red dot. It dances around, making me smile despite myself. I jab at the right joystick, trying to make the little red ball go where I want it to. It moves too fast, almost as if mocking my efforts. I squish the A button and the dot glows brighter. Pressing B dims it again. Frustration turns into fascination as I learn the rhythm of this new toy.
